Owen (オーウェン Ōwen) is a Midland noble.[3] He led Midland's Toumel Knights (トゥーメル騎士団).[1] Currently, he is a general and the Head of Falconia's castle guard.[2]
Appearance[]
Owen is a tall, clean shaven man with medium-length hair.
Personality[]
A friend of Laban,[4][5][3][6] Owen is critical of the scheming nobles of Midland, seeing they place themselves over the dying population of a kingdom in shambles as if the subjects were nothing but statistics.[7] During the Kushan Empire invasion, he tries to urge them to stick together for the kingdom instead of placing themselves above the relief for their territories and subjects alike.[3] When Griffith returns alongside Princess Charlotte, Owen makes them realize the role of both figures above that of fleeing nobility when it comes to rouse the strength of their subjects.[8]
Though approving of Griffith,[4][5][7][1][6] he is aware of his otherwordly presence he displays after his incarnation.[9] Even in the days prior to the capture of Doldrey, he pondered on the extraordinary looks of the Falcon.[4] He feels sorry for Charlotte due to the way a timid girl like her is made to bear the burden of Midland's situation.[7]
Story[]
Golden Age Arc[]
Owen is one of the military Midland figures that discuss the situation with Doldrey alongside the King of Midland, who orders the Band of the Falcon to capture the fortress. After the meeting, he talks to Laban, having noticed his fellow noble's trust in the White Falcon. They both seem hopeful that Griffith will emerge victorious. As they see Griffith mount his horse to leave, Griffith nods his head politely before heading out. Owen then comments on his otherworldly looks.[4]
Owen is also one of the people who attend the victory celebration after Doldrey has been captured. Noticing other generals staring intently at Griffith, Owen points to their inability to see the Band of the Falcon's merit, and commends Laban's foresight for speaking up to him.[5] Owen and Laban are left speechless when the Band of the Falcon is awarded the white title, the highest ennoblement title. When Griffith collapses, seemingly dead, they order the guards to seal all the exits.[10]
Conviction Arc[]
On his deathbed, the King of Midland asks for Charlotte. The court doctor orders Owen to fetch her. Marching to the end of the hall, former minister Foss delivers a cryptic message: "The Falcon will come again". Riding his horse across the main castle grounds, Owen remembers how, following the hawk dream the whole population experienced, the priests of the land clamored that it was a revelation sent by God. As he notices how the King fell ill right after people began discussing the dream, Owen is then restricted access to her room by her handmaidens. Owen addresses Charlotte through the door, but she refuses to leave.[7]
Millennium Falcon Arc[]
In Vritannis, a ball is held in anticipation of the departure to the front against the Kushan Empire. There, a furious Owen attempts to interrupt a fight between two Midland noblemen, ordering them to stop shaming Midland further than it already has been. Owen reaffirms the nobles' reason for coming to Vritannis: to seek out aid for Midland's cause, urging them to bind together to reclaim the kingdom. The Midland nobles concur, but are aware that their goal can only be achieved if the royal bloodline still exists. Owen stares up at the ceiling, thinking of Laban and wondering if he safely infiltrated Wyndham.[3]
During the attack on Vritannis, and after having wondered where had he seen him before,[11] Owen approaches Guts, and asks him whether he's the Raiders' Captain of the Band of the Falcon.[12] Owen introduces himself to Guts, then says that he recognizes from seeing him during the latter's tenure as the Raiders' Captain of the Band of the Falcon. Owen asks for Guts' name, but Guts refuses to give it, wanting to let the past remain the past. Owen quickly asks about Griffith's current whereabouts. Guts replies that he doesn't know and walks back to his group, commenting that Griffith may be closer than Owen suspects. Owen stares at Guts as the latter leaves and hopes that the collective prophetic dream will come true.[1]
In the aftermath of the attack, Owen rides across Vritannis with several soldiers. The lack of monster corpses makes Owen wonder whether the monsters' presence was a dream. When the Kushan force arrives, Owen exits Vritannis wondering when did it arrive. He notices its large numbers, enough to circle the armies of the Holy See alliance. He realizes that, if forced to battle, the sheer size of both armies will make things uncontrollable.[13] Owen begins to panic as the surviving Holy See soldiers rush back to the protection of Vritannis' walls. He sees that the Holy See has no chance of victory against the much larger Kushan force, and realizes that the attack the previous night was simply a preemptive strike to cause disarray. He is then shocked at the sudden Kushan animal rampage.[14] Not knowing the identity of the third army, he surprises himself by recognizing the flag that they ride beneath - that of the Band of the Falcon.[15] He is then shocked at the seeming victory (actually a stalemate) against the Kushan Empire army.[16] When gazing at Griffith's exposed visage, Owen notices how his already striking presence is now as if beyond the reach of man.[9] As Princess Charlotte asks for the Midland nobles to join the reborn Band of the Falcon to recapture Midland, they insist she has made her decisions without proper consideration or their advice. Their protests are silenced by Owen, who tells his fellow nobles that they are to obey her will: while they were hiding, Griffith worked to free Midland and rescue Charlotte. Furthermore, they are to understand the importance of the White Falcon and the Princess.[8]
En route to the showdown against Ganishka, Owen and other military figures ride among the band members. While the men are somewhat suspicious of Griffith's ability to easily influence the Pontiff, Owen himself decides that he and his men must be thankful to Griffith, as he and his soldiers are the reason that they can return to Midland again. He notes that Griffith's being so close to Charlotte gives him the impression that Griffith is without equal.[17] At dawn, they come across the evacuated Wyndham citizens, and Owen warmly greets Laban, who was one of their leading figures.[6] Watching from the hills outside Wyndham, the entire Band of the Falcon, Laban, the Arklow Knights, the resistance force and the escaped population of Wyndham watch the advent of a twice-incarnated Ganishka.[18] When the showdown begins, Owen is one of the people tasked by Griffith with protecting Princess Charlotte, the Pontiff and the people of Wyndham.[19] He then witnesses the sight of the War Demons in their released form and is shocked by the implications this may have until Sonia's telepathic voice angrily orders him and the other humans to quell any such suspicions.[20] Owen and the military figures stand their ground against the Ganishka spawns.[21] Later on, they witness the Great Roar of the Astral World[22] and the appearance of Falconia.[23]
Fantasia Arc[]
When Rickert makes his way to an audience with Griffith, he runs into Owen, now the head of Falconia's castle guard. Having heard of Rickert's arrival and status from Laban, he came to greet him in person. Together, they penetrate further into the citadel, and Owen explains that Rickert cannot meet with Griffith immediately since the latter is in the middle of a ceremony. Rickert's confusion is abated when he and Owen enter a large room full of people mourning their deceased loved ones. Owen explains to Rickert that the deceased are refugees who did not survive the trip to Falconia, and whose loved ones are now saying their last goodbyes. Locus appears behind Rickert and Owen. He explains that, in seeing their dead loved ones, the humans in the room are seeing what lies beyond death.[2] With Griffith busy, Locus asks Owen if he can bring Rickert away from the room. Though at first Owen is reluctant, he acquiesces when two guards run over and inform him of a thief having broken into the castle. He departs with the guards while Locus and Rickert leave together.[24]
Some time later, a council of Falconia officials assembles to discuss various matters relating to the capital city and nation of Midland. Owen makes known the policing and socio-economic issues of Falconia, noting the growing issues in the residence areas of migrants from distant lands, as well as the security risk of congregating heretical refugees.[25]
