Humans, for the most part, are the main inhabitants of the Mortal World. Having pioneered past evolution from mere apes, they have built upon the planet civilizations that span across the world and ultimately are always at war with one another for dominance. That being said, humans are a generally selfish race that will go to any length for more Power...even becoming a post-human race known as Apostles, which are basically demon evolutions of the previous human that they once were.

Appearance

Humans are a varied race as they can have just about any shape, height or size. The most distinguishing features that they possess would have to be five fingers per hand (which each human has two of), five toes to every foot (just like hands, two of) and four limbs which are two arms and two legs from birth. In a rare case a deformity may occur that possibly cause additional fingers or toes and possibly a fused appearance to where it's as if they hever had toes in the first place. Of course, if a human loses any part of their body it is almost impossible during this era to keep it, as they do not possess the regenerative capabilities of other species.

A human's face will almost always be born with two eyes, one nose and a mouth...as well eyebrows being the first facial hair they recieve and then a full head of hair on top. Deformity can occur from birth which may drastically change the symetrical look to a human's face (such as the Torturer that abused Griffith) and may cause any one feature to be absent or more pronounced than normal. This is also the most important feature of a human's body that allows others to identify them as individuals...some humans come with softtoned, gentle skin and lack any form of scarring or wrinkles such as Griffith...while others are more brutish in appearance, having large lips and large jaws such as Adon Coborlwitz. Typically the former is considered more attractive to the females of the race, as it is a species built strongly on sexual attraction with the intent in mating.

Every man and woman is built with a torso in mind, containing a chest area, abdomen, buttocks and the frontal portion with varying reproductive organs. For men, this includes the exterior genitals and the women possess interior organs. Another feature unique to women are breasts, while possible for men based on a genetic deformity, are rare but serve the primary function of providing nutrition for newborns and are a center of sexual activity in the Berserk Universe.

The size and shape of humans can depend on their genes or how much they work out their body. Some people are of an average size, being between 5 foot 5 to 5 foot 7 and have a slim, toned body due to training it like Judeau. Others could be at least 7 feet tall and have a wide, muscular form that intimidates others (though they almost always have brutish faces) such as Pippin. Men such as Guts and Gambino take an intermediate here, being both tall and muscular but not gigantic such as Zondark or Bazuso. Then there are older individuals who are as short as a child and typically stand with a hunch, such as Dahl or Foss. Another type of human would be the more heavyset but lazy individuals, such as Vlad Tepes in human form or the Count. In addition there are deformities, which create strange looking individuals like the Torturer or the Swine Apostle's human form.

Personality

As a very diverse race, there are so many different personalities that make each and every character unique in some way. Though there are a few prominent types of personalities based purely on the 7 Sins and 7 Virtues.

Proud (Pride) Personality - Belongs to someone who views themselves as greater as anyone below them and will not accept someone as their equal in battle. They step on people to further their success and are considered very selfish.

Jealous (Envy) Personality - Belongs to someone who wishes they could be better than someone and hates it when someone else steps on them, wishing to remove whatever is causing them their jealousy. They usually are not proud of their previous accomplishments as only furthering themselves above someone they dislike will satisfy them.

Angry (Wrath) Personality - Belongs to someone who is enraged very easily, probably a particularly violent person like Guts that will kill anyone that stands in his way when he is in Berserk Mode. They are typically irritated by anyone that talks too much about themselves or laments on emotional issues...their rage is kept in check by their own personal views and will erupt if something is taken from them, such as a loved one.

Lazy (Sloth) Personality - Belongs to someone that sits back and lets others do the work, really lacking any motivation to do something worth while and tends to sleep a lot. Characters such as these annoy people with Angry Personalities but the lazy person usually just ignores this.

Sexual (Lust) Personality - Belongs to someone that desires nothing more than to pursue their sexual desires with a person. Sometimes they can be considered dangerous due to this lust...or othertimes they are just overally active in how they sleep with people.

Greedy (Greed) Personality - Belongs to someone who wants more out of life...far more than a normal person should. These individuals crave money and possessions more than any other, willing to sacrifice lives and relationships just so that they can have more currency to their name.

Gluttonous (Gluttony) Personality - Belongs to someone who spends their lives thinking of the next meal. They typically have no concern for their own body weight and live to consume, in a way Apostles are just the same way as they live to feast on Humans.

Plot

Humans in the Berserk Universe are placed within a Wartime era, back in medival times. Lands are ruled by Dukes, Counts, Barons and Kings...with no police structure, Guards are instead used as the main enforcers of the law. Laws are created by the ruler of each town or landscape, with some sharing the same principles as others. Much of the lower class are reverted to peasents and work just to get by, while the rich Nobles are mere aristocrats that enjoy the fanciest clothes and fully prepared meals.

Apart from the civilization, there is always fighting going on somewhere. Mercenaries, or men for hire, are a common sight. It is not uncommon to instead see armies of Mercs fighting one another rather than Knights in an army, as they are considered expendable at any given point and work just for the money. Bandits or criminals, are also a part of the daily life...as they are the crudest individuals that rape women, kill children and steal whatever they can for a profit.

Humans however reached their prime only in the Golden Era arc as much of the remainder of Berserk focuses on the Apostles eating or murdering humans. During the Golden Era, the 100 Year War was fought and many lives were lost...the main threat to the protagonists at the time belonged to the Tudor Empire, whom sent famous knights after knight to face down the Band of the Hawk but all promptly were eliminated, even the infamous general Boscogn of the Purple Rhino Knights. Apostles were rare during this time, seen only in the case of Zodd and later Wyald before the Eclipse.

Following the events of the Eclipse and during The Black Swordsman arc, humans are seen as mere cattle under the rule of Apostles. Many guardsmen are still displayed as arrogant, almost to the degree that they could be confused with criminals and many of the townspeople fear the Apostle that rules over them.

Notable Humans

Guts - The Main protagonist who clings onto his humanity every day as he faces down human, Apostle and the spirits that are attracted to him because of the Brand.

Band of the Hawk - The original Band of the Hawk was made of a group of mercenaries, all young and inspired by a dream, to follow Griffith to the top.

Casca - One of the main protagonists, she was a former member of the Band of the Hawk and the mother to Guts's Child.

Griffith = The main antagonist of the series, he focused on a dream of a kingdom above all others and sacrificed many to try reaching this dream. After his reincarnation, he can be considered human once more.
