The Cannon Arm is a device worn and used by Guts. While in its base state it functions as a prosthetic arm, it can double up as a miniature cannon. It has proven its usefulness several times in battle as a secondary weapon next to the Dragon Slayer.

Background[]

The device was made by Rickert out of various materials he came across in Godot's warehouse. According to Erica, she helped in creating it as well. Rickert gave it to Guts as a farewell gift before he left for his two-year revenge against the apostles. It replaces Guts' left forearm, which he lost during the Eclipse. The hand hides a small magnet in order to better handle the Dragon Slayer, and above all it hides a cannon that many times saved the life of the Black Swordsman. The hand swivels downward to expose the barrel of the cannon.

Appearance[]

The cannon arm resembles a miniature cannon or a large-bore musket. Its firing mechanism consists largely of a lit match, making it a match-lock firearm. The weapon is hidden behind the prosthetic hand, but a simple flick of Guts' artificial wrist puts the entire hand in a folding position, allowing him to fire the cannon.

Usage[]

Guts operates the cannon by loading powder into the barrel and ramming the cannonball into the barrel with a special ramrod. Guts then pulls a rope/cord that pulls his mechanical hand below the barrel which then leads to the powder igniting and then firing. Guts makes use of this cord in situations where he cannot let go of the Dragon Slayer or he can't use his right hand by pulling the cord with his teeth and firing the cannon that way.

Although an incredibly powerful and useful tool, Guts has acknowledged his prosthetic arm's limited functionality compared to his original limb. The hand's position is normally static and cannot change, but the magical nature of the Berserker Armor allows Guts to manipulate the fingers of the arm freely.

As it is a mechanical weapon, Guts must regularly maintain it with gunpowder and ammunition for both the cannon and crossbow to ensure its continuous use in battle as well as tools used to clean the barrel which he keeps in his bags.

It can also mount the repeater crossbow, allowing Guts to shoot multiple arrows in quick succession.

Notes[]

  • In the first Dark Horse English translation of the manga, the translator made Guts use the one-liner "Groovy" to describe his new arm in allusion to the chainsaw worn by Ashley J. Williams of "The Evil Dead" franchise. This reference was changed in the Berserk Deluxe edition for a more straightforward translation.
  • In Casca's dreamscape, her version of Guts also had a cannon inside its mouth instead of mounted on a prosthetic limb.
